Westport Country Lodge Hotel is situated in the townland of Aughaower or Achadh Ghobhair in Irish, and is about 2.5km from Westport Town if you are driving out on the Ballinrobe road.
The historic village of Auhagower is close by and is rich in culture and folklore and as such attracts many visitors. Walking through the village you can experience the atmosphere and take in the sights such as the tenth century round tower which was built between 973 and 1013. Legend has it that when the capstone of the tower was struck by lightning and was found nearly half a mile away on the hill of Tavenish, a local woman carried the large stone to the church where it still can be seen today.
The village itself is said to have been visited by St.Patrick as he made his way from Ballintubber Abbey to Croagh Patrick.
