Trail is great to see by bicycle with cycle hire for adults and children available at the reception desk, or you may wish to gently amble along the trail on foot, taking in the beautiful scents of Gorse, Wild Heather and Fuschia to mention just a few of wild flowers that are plentiful all along the route.
Which ever mode of transport you choose, there really is something for everyone. The trail going through Mulranny has some amazing views looking down to the sea and and expanse of golden sand that stretches out before you ....or go further onto the island of Achill
which boasts breathtaking coastal views that stretch out before you.
The Westport Country Lodge makes the perfect base to explore the Greenway as it sits perfectly between the majestic Croagh Patrick mountain and is only five minutes from the start of the Mayo Greenway.
Surrounded by the most stunning scenery that Westport and the West of Ireland has to show, you can escape the bustle of urban life and venture out on the 42km Great Western Greenway, the longest off-road walking and cycling trail in Ireland. The World Class Great Western Greenway is a traffic free cycling and walking trail which follows the route of the renowned Westport to Achill railway which closed in 1937.
The Greenway stretches lazily along Ireland’s Atlantic coast between Westport Town and Achill Island and visits the picturesque villages of Newport
(Mallaranny). It passes by some of the West of Ireland’s most dramatic mountains and offers magnificent views of Clew Bay and its many islands.
